Mrs. Betty Joe Todd Hughley, 76, of LaFayette died Sunday, June 18, 2023, at her residence. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 22, 2023, at St. Luke C.M.E. Church, Oak Bowery, AL at 2:00 p.m. (CST) with Pastor Winfred McCoy, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be Wednesday, June 21, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (CST) at Vines Funeral Home.
Betty was born December 14, 1946, in Chambers County to the late Joseph and Elnora Todd. At an early age, she united with the St. Luke C.M.E. Church, Oak Bowery, AL where she later served as a steward board member and as an usher. Betty received her education in the Chambers County School System. She retired from West Point Pepperell in Opelika and then worked part-time at the Senior Citizen Center in LaFayette. Betty was married to the late Sylvester Hughley. To this union, two children were born, Edward and Michael Hughley, whom she loved dearly. Betty loved God, family, friends, watching her favorite TV shows, and cooking her famous sweet potato pies, always in competition with her sister, Jeanette. Betty will be sincerely missed.
Betty is survived by her two children: Edward Hughley and Michael Hughley both of LaFayette; six grandchildren: Bartless Vines, Tyrek Hughley, McKayla Hughley, Ladajah Hughley, Ebonie (KR) Snipers and Kimberley Brooks; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters: Sarah Hughley, Auburn, Jeanette (Bishop Frank) McLeod, and Annette (Johnnie) Bryant both of Opelika; four brothers: Rev Daniel (Martha) Todd, Walter Todd, Donald Todd, and Victory (Janet) Todd all of LaFayette; special friends: Larry Holloway and Sharon Holloway; caregiver, Rev. Evelyn Weavers; and a host of other relatives and friends.
